As Joanne Langione Dance Center proudly celebrates its 50th Anniversary Season, we are thrilled to share an exciting milestone in our studio’s history: the opening of JLDC on Washington, a brand-new expansion that will serve as the next chapter in our studio’s evolution.
For five decades, JLDC has been far more than just a dance studio. From its earliest days, our studio has stood as a place where children take their very first pliés, where teenagers discover their passion for movement and performance, and where countless young people find both confidence and lifelong friendships. Our mission has always centered on nurturing each student not only as a dancer but as a person. We’ve seen generations of dancers grow up inside our studios, carrying with them the discipline, artistry, and resilience they develop at JLDC into every stage of their lives.
Now, with the opening of JLDC on Washington, we are thrilled to expand our physical space but even more importantly, to expand the experiences and opportunities we are able to provide to our community of students.
A Space That Honors the Past and Builds the Future
JLDC on Washington is located at 1314 Washington Street, right in the heart of historic West Newton Square, just a short walk from our original home on Border Street. While this expansion brings beautiful new studios and amenities to JLDC, it also carries with it a unique sense of history that makes this building particularly special.
The new JLDC on Washington is housed inside one of West Newton’s most recognizable historic buildings. Originally built in the early 20th century as a bank, the building stands today as part of the West Newton Village Center Historic District, a designation recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. Its design is rooted in the Classical Revival style, with its beautiful limestone detailing, tall Venetian arched windows, stately brickwork, and grand architectural presence. The building has long been a landmark in the neighborhood, serving as a reminder of West Newton’s rich history and strong sense of community.
In recent years, the building has undergone a thoughtful and carefully planned restoration, preserving its elegant historic façade while reimagining the interior as a state-of-the-art space designed specifically for modern use. The result is a perfect blend of old and new: a building that honors the past while opening the door to an exciting future—a vision that aligns perfectly with JLDC’s own 50-year journey.
We could not imagine a more fitting place for JLDC’s next chapter!
Designed for Dancers
While the building itself provides a stunning architectural backdrop, it is what lies within that excites us most: two expansive, state-of-the-art dance studios purposefully designed with our dancers’ artistry, safety, and experience in mind.
Each studio at JLDC on Washington features professionally installed marley flooring over sprung wood subfloors, offering optimal support and protection for our dancers as they train. These floors reduce the risk of injury and allow students to practice their technique safely, whether they are mastering foundational ballet steps, exploring modern and contemporary choreography, or preparing for performances.
The studios are bathed in natural light that pours in through the oversized Venetian windows, while soaring ceilings create a sense of openness and inspiration. The design of these new studios is not only beautiful but highly intentional: every element is designed to support both the physical and creative needs of our students. We know that dance is about more than just movement; it is also about how the environment shapes a dancer’s confidence, artistry, and joy. Our goal was to create a space that elevates the experience for every student who walks through the doors.
Beyond the studios themselves, JLDC on Washington offers comfortable waiting areas where parents and siblings can relax between classes. Additionally, the facility offers ample private parking and seamless drop-off and pickup from the rear entrance, making the logistics of getting to and from dance class as easy as possible for our busy families.
Expanding Opportunities for Every Dancer
At the heart of this expansion is our commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for every JLDC student. While we’ve always worked tirelessly to meet the interest and passion of our dancers, JLDC on Washington allows us to respond to student demand in exciting and meaningful ways.
With this expansion, we are able to offer:
- New classes across multiple age levels and disciplines, allowing students to explore different styles and techniques as they develop as well-rounded dancers.
- Additional sections of our most popular classes, helping us accommodate more students and reduce waitlists for our in-demand programs.
- Expanded DanceLab offerings, giving students more opportunities to explore choreography, creative exploration and technique.
- An increase in School for Excellence invitations, providing more advanced dancers with opportunities to push themselves artistically and technically in an intensive, focused environment.
This added capacity is not just about filling schedules; it is about giving each student the opportunity to follow their unique dance journey at their own pace and level. Whether your child is just beginning in our early childhood Playdance program, growing into our Skill Lab and DanceLab programs, or pursuing pre-professional aspirations through our School for Excellence, the new space allows us to better serve every dancer in our care.
Rooted in the Newton Community
While JLDC has grown and evolved over the past 50 years, one thing has never changed: our deep roots in the Newton community. From our earliest days, we have been part of the fabric of this town, and we are deeply proud that JLDC on Washington remains right here, walking distance from our home on Border Street.
JLDC remains deeply committed to the personal, family-oriented culture that has defined us for five decades. Our faculty, administrative team, and staff remain entirely focused on building meaningful relationships with every student and family who walks through our doors. The addition of JLDC on Washington allows us to serve more dancers while continuing to offer the individualized attention, expert instruction, and supportive community that JLDC is known for.
Honoring 50 Years and the Next 50 to Come
Now that JLDC on Washington is open, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey that has brought us to this moment. Fifty years ago, Joanne Langione Dance Center was founded with a simple but powerful mission: to share the joy of dance with children in a positive, nurturing environment. That mission has guided every decision we’ve made since.
Today, we are honored to have witnessed so many students grow and thrive inside our studios. We’ve cheered as our dancers performed their first solos, earned scholarships, joined college dance teams, and returned as alumni to share their experiences with the next generation. But perhaps most importantly, we’ve seen how the lessons learned at JLDC stay with our students long after they’ve left the stage.
JLDC on Washington is not only an expansion of our space but also a celebration of everything our community has built together over the past five decades. It is a reflection of the love, dedication, and passion that our faculty, families, and students bring to this studio every single day. And it is a promise that, as we move forward, we will continue to provide the same high level of care, professionalism, and excellence that our families have come to trust.
What Comes Next
With the final preparations for JLDC on Washington well underway, we are eager to share even more exciting updates in the weeks to come. We encourage families to stay tuned to email and social media for all the latest announcements as our grand opening approaches.
As we stand at the start of this exciting new chapter, we do so with immense gratitude. For the families who have supported us, for the students who have trusted us to guide their dance journeys, and for the community that has allowed JLDC to thrive for 50 years. JLDC on Washington represents the continuation of our mission to create a home where dancers of all ages can learn, grow, and discover who they are both inside the studio and beyond.
We are excited to welcome you into this beautiful new space.
The next chapter begins now and it’s just the beginning!
