Possessed by the beat of music thumping loud, enthusiastic audiences cheering, lightsticks flashing and dancers of all ages grooving – that is The Hip Hop Show, Joanne Langione Dance Center’s annual winter performance of all Hip Hop dance!

This high-energy, jam-packed weekend of performances has become a favorite amongst the community as it is the only one of its kind in the Boston area. Joanne Langione Dance Center’s Hip Hop program is popular with students who come only to study Hip Hop and also with students who want to add it to their repertoire of other dance genres. And no matter what classes you take at JLDC, one thing is true for everyone – The Hip Hop Show is where all the hard work culminates in a fun, confidence-building performance!

Hip Hop is a dance style that is constantly developing and evolving as part of the culture of Hip Hop music. With heavy inspiration from street dancing, Hip Hop is highly stylized and requires years of training to achieve an effortless result. 

Hip Hop has the ability to push the envelope while still respecting and highlighting the history that it comes from. Because Hip Hop culture is ever changing and constantly expanding, the dance style has expanded and grown which keeps it to remain fresh and exciting.

JLDC’s expert faculty have nurtured the Hip Hop program to turn it into what it is today. 

Michelle Cueroni leads JLDC’s beginner through advanced Hip Hop dancers. She carries her impressive dance background, which includes performing with two Boston-based Hip Hop troupes, with her to each class. Michelle is passionate about choreographing dances that are both challenging and fun while bringing out the best in her dancers! 

“The best thing about teaching Hip Hop at JLDC is watching kids come out of their shells unexpectedly. It’s awesome to watch them just go for it.”- Cueroni shares.

There are so many incredible benefits that come from learning Hip Hop such as rhythm, coordination, and exploring your own artistic expression. When asked to share her best advice when it came to studying Hip Hop, Michelle shared: “Let go of fear of judgment and just be yourself and have fun. If you step out of your comfort zone, you will discover so much more about yourself.”

There is a Hip Hop class for every age and level at JLDC. Have a 3 year old that is interested in dance? Kidzhop Fit & Tumble is the perfect starting point. Maybe your teen dancer has some dance experience and wants to brush up before school dance team tryouts, Hip Hop Dance Team provides the opportunity to train and work hard with like-minded students.

No matter the age or skill level, there are many Hip Hop class options at the Joanne Langione Dance Center. Each class has the same core values of good training, hard work, and fun. The 2023-2024 season is enrolling now!

Interested in other class genres? In addition to Hip Hop, JLDC offers classes from babies to teens in ballet, tap, jazz, modern and acrodance. With the combination of the faculty of experts, mixed with the supportive, encouraging, and loving community that surrounds 38 Border St., the sky’s the limit!

Shawn Mahoney

Shawn Mahoney began his ballet, tap, and jazz training at the Joanne Langione Dance Center and his early performing career with Jose Mateo’s Ballet Theatre in Boston, MA. As an apprentice, Shawn danced for American Ballet Theatre before joining Boston Ballet. At Boston Ballet, Shawn performed in Petipa, Balanchine, Kylian, Forsythe, Bejart and others. Shawn performed as a chosen member of “Tharp!”, a national and international touring company directed by Twyla Tharp. Ms. Tharp invited Shawn to be part of the creative and choreographic process for her Broadway hit “Movin’ Out” and performed in Tharp’s “Red, White, and Blues”. Shawn performed with the Suzanne Farrell/Balanchine Project, Sean Curran Company, Washington Ballet, and Bale Estado de Goias. As an educator, Shawn has taught internationally for Festa de Danca in Sao Paulo and Bermuda Civic Ballet. Currently, Shawn is on faculty at Emerson College, instructing dance classes to actors and musical theatre students and is a teacher and lecturer at Days in the Arts. Shawn founded Mahoney Agency, representing dancers for national engagements for the Nutcracker Ballet. Shawn is a sought out mentor for emerging artists and choreographers in ballet and contemporary dance.
