Life After JLDC: Alumna Sydney DiLoreto Shares 8 Lessons that Dance Has Taught Her

At the Joanne Langione Dance Center, we take great pride in watching our students grow, not only as dancers but as individuals. We are fortunate to be able to celebrate the accomplishments of our dancers, who have spent countless hours training, performing, and building lasting memories in our studio.

In this blog post, we’re pleased to share a special message from one of our alumni, Sydney DiLoreto who has reflected on the valuable life lessons that dance—and her time at JLDC—have imparted. From discipline to creativity, teamwork to resilience, this heartfelt reflection highlights the impact that dance has had on her personal journey and the lasting influence of her experiences at JLDC.

“Growing up dancing has been an integral part of shaping who I am today. Through countless hours of practice, performances, and learning, dance has imparted invaluable lessons that still impact my daily life. As I reflect on my journey, I’ve identified eight key insights that dance has taught me, each one contributing significantly to my personal growth and development.”

“To me, dance is a self-motivating sport. Consistent practice is key for maintaining strength as a dancer. Stretching every day and pushing myself to improve became essential parts of my routine, teaching me that progress comes from dedication and perseverance. While only I could push myself to become better, the teachers at JLDC fostered a positive relationship with having a strong work ethic. Their encouragement and high expectations helped me develop a sense of responsibility and determination that shaped my approach to dance and life.”

  • Teamwork and Collaboration

“Through dance, I’ve learned the importance of collaboration and teamwork. In group routines, being in sync with others is crucial; we all need to be consistent and aligned to create a cohesive performance. Working closely with fellow dancers taught me how to communicate effectively, support one another, and rely on each other’s strengths. This experience has shown me how teamwork can lead to success and has influenced how I approach group projects and collaborations in other areas of my life.”

  • Creativity and Artistic Expression

“Dance has been a powerful medium for creativity and artistic expression, with each routine blending rhythm, music, and motion into something original. The choreographers at JLDC allowed me to convey emotions, tell stories, and explore ideas through my interpretation of their pieces. Now, as I choreograph my own work in college, I tap into the creativity I gained from the diverse routines I learned at JLDC, expressing my individuality and artistic vision.”

  • Resilience and Perseverance

“Throughout my dance journey, I’ve faced many challenges, from mastering complex choreography to overcoming self-doubt and dealing with injuries. There were moments when I felt discouraged and unable to grasp a new skill. However, the unwavering support from my instructors at JLDC taught me the true meaning of perseverance: to keep pushing forward even when it’s tough. The positive and supportive environment at JLDC showed me how to perform through mistakes. This resilience has inspired me to tackle other challenges in my everyday life with the same determination.”

  • Confidence and Self-esteem

“Although I was never particularly shy, I was initially terrified of performing. Dance offered a supportive environment where I could confront this fear. Practices like “across the floor,” where I performed in front of peers, and “Un.Convention,” a summer intensive workshop at JLDC with inspiring master teachers, provided a safe space to build my confidence. These experiences helped me grow and embrace the stage with newfound enthusiasm. Now, I not only love performing but also carry that self-assurance into every aspect of my life.”

  • Time Management

“My rigorous dance schedule, with classes six days a week, pushed me to balance school and athletics, teaching me to manage my time effectively and stay organized. I learned to prioritize tasks, create efficient routines, and make the most of every moment. These lessons in managing responsibilities and being self-reliant are crucial as I navigate life independently, helping me stay on top of my commitments and thrive in all areas.”

  • Leadership

“Dance fostered my growth in leadership by transitioning from looking up to older dancers as a younger student to guiding and inspiring the younger kids myself. At JLDC, opportunities like being a Junior Apprentice at SummerDance and a teacher’s assistant during the year allowed me to experience firsthand what it means to be a leader. These roles helped me understand the importance of responsibility, mentorship, and setting a positive example, shaping my approach to leadership both within and beyond the dance studio.”

  • Lifelong Friendship and Community Alumna Sydney Diloreto high fiving with a young JLDC student.

“My most treasured takeaway from my 13 years at JLDC is the deep sense of community and the lifelong friendships I’ve forged. The challenges of tough routines and long rehearsals brought us closer together, turning teammates into my closest friends. JLDC provided a safe space where we could be ourselves, connect through our shared love of dance, and support one another. This warm atmosphere allowed us to grow together, care for each other, and build lasting bonds. Even after graduating, these friendships remain strong, with one of my closest friends becoming my roommate. Returning as a summer camp counselor, I find that JLDC still feels like home, a place where our shared experiences continue to foster a sense of belonging and joy.

Growing up dancing has been much more than a series of routines and performances; it has been a gift. More than that, being able to train at JLDC has been a reward. The lessons I’ve learned have shaped me into who I am today. The community and friendships I’ve built through dance continue to be a source of strength and joy. As I move forward, I carry these invaluable insights with me, grateful for how dance has enriched my life and prepared me for the future.”

We are incredibly proud of the young adults our students become, and this reflection beautifully captures the essence of what JLDC dance education can instill. The lessons learned through dance go far beyond the studio walls, shaping how our students approach challenges, relationships, and opportunities in their lives. As our graduates moves on through life’s adventures, we are thrilled to know that the values nurtured at JLDC will continue to inspire them.
